Linseed (flax) is one of the oldest cultivated plants and produces linseed oil and flax/ linen fibres. Linseed oil is extracted from the seeds and is extremely rich in Omega-3 acids. Outside the kitchen, the refined oil is also used in the production of paint, soap and printing ink. Flax, more commonly known as ‘linen’, is thought to be one of the first plants whose fibres were used in the textile industry, and linen is as popular as ever, as an elegant, yet natural and breezy fabric for summer garments. Amazingly, the plant is also used as insulation material, upholstery filler and in painting canvases, book binding and the shoe industry. The cultivation of linseed is simple and straightforward. For a successful harvest, the crop only requires regular watering before and during the flowering period (mid June).
