American mountain mint is a rather unknown species in our country, which is completely unjustified. It is a North American perennial with an aroma that is a cross between mint and thyme. Like other common mints, American mountain mint can be used as a seasoning and tea plant. Many people even find its flavour to be identical to that of the more common mints. In its native country it is used as a medicinal plant for the relief of colds and stomach ailments. It looks more like a monarda than a native mint. The whole plant, including the dainty and numerous white flowers, gives off a pleasantly fresh mint scent and magically attracts beneficial insects. In fact, American mountain mint is a very good melliferous and polliniferous ressorce and fits perfectly in with herbs and flowers of a natural garden concept. Unlike the numerous Mentha species, American mountain mint does not spread through runners. It spreads but does not take over a whole area in your garden within a short time.
