Indian rhubarb (Darmera peltata), also known as umbrella plant or giant cup, is a fascinating plant. One of the most remarkable features of the Indian rhubarb is its large, rounded leaves, which sit on long stems and resemble umbrellas or shields. These leaves can reach up to 60cm in diameter and not only provide a spectacular display, but also shelter and shade for small animals such as frogs. Unlike most other plants, it flowers before the leaves have fully developed. In spring the pink to white flowers appear in conspicuous, spherical clusters on tall stalks, creating an impressive display. In autumn, Indian rhubarb fades away with a final colour spectacle, as its large leaves can assume a magnificent autumn colouring that ranges from yellow to bright red. It is an ideal plant for damp locations and grows particularly well along pond edges, in wetlands or other areas with high water levels. Once established Darmera peltata is a very hardy and easy to care for plant. It requires minimal maintenance and is resistant to most pests and diseases.
